A Frosty Arrival in Halifax
It was just after midnight on January 25th, 2022, when my family and I landed at Halifax Stanfield Airport, marking the beginning of our first Canadian winter. Exhausted from an 18-hour flight from the UAE. The biting cold hit us like a wall as we stepped out of the terminal, a sharp contrast to the desert warmth we’d left behind. Being too late and too far out of town to get an Uber, I decided to rent a car from Hertz office on Bell Boulevard at Halifax Stanfield Airport. Little did I know this car would soon lead to one of the most bizarre experiences of my life.
Navigating the snowy roads for the first time in a rented 2021 Dodge Grand Caravan was nerve-wracking. With no Canadian SIM card and no mobile network, I made screenshots of my route and memorized popular landmarks on my route. I drove through the snowstorm as my exhausted wife and daughter slept in the back of the big grey van. The snowstorm was relentless, the kind that turns every street into a white blur. My heart raced with every skid. Driving through a snowstorm without GPS was like crafting websites for SN Tech clients with evolving needs—both demand quick thinking, problem-solving, and a steady hand. Thankfully, we arrived safely, ready to embrace our new adventure.
Snow: A Magical First Encounter
The next morning, we woke up to a magical scene: snowflakes dancing outside the window. It was our first time experiencing snow, and it felt surreal. We couldn’t resist stepping outside to touch it, giggling like kids seeing rainbows for the first time. We walked, talked and played in snow. Wow! What a joy.
The excitement turned to panic when I reversed the rental car. While trying to drive out to a nearby restaurant for breakfast, I heard a loud screech. “Oh no, did I just wreck the car?” I jumped out, I was certain I’d damaged the van, only to discover I had merely driven over a frozen pile of snow. Relief doesn’t even begin to describe it, we carried on with our day.
A Chilling Trip Back to Hertz
Two days later, on January 27th, I returned the van to Hertz. Temperatures had plunged to -12°C, and after dropping off the car, I waited for the bus to take me back. The sweaters that I had bought from Dubai thinking they were winter jackets were terribly insufficient. I waited 20 minutes for the bus, nearly freezing solid. When the bus finally arrived, the driver refused my $10 bill—they only accepted exact change and no credit or debit cards. Defeated, I was about to step off and wait another hour for the next bus when a group of passengers chipped in coins to cover my fare. Their generosity warmed me more than any heater ever could.
Grand Theft Auto Accusation
Just when I thought my first Canadian winter adventure had ended, Hertz sent me a stern shocking email accusing me of not returning the van. They said that I MUST return the van to HERTZ as per rental agreement to the same or any other location within 10 Days else Grand Theft Auto charges will be promptly filed against me. They threatened Grand Theft Auto charges which would lead to my arrest in attempt to recover the vehicle. This unexpected email from Hertz hit me like a snowball to the face. Did I return the car to the wrong place? Am I dreaming? I wondered.
I was furious but I managed to take my laptop out, collect supporting documents and emailed Hertz with proof that I had returned the car on the specified date and time. Hertz later admitted their mistake, apologizing for the mix-up. The ordeal was resolved, but not without adding a dramatic twist to our winter tale.
Final Reflections on Our First Canadian Winter
